Course Report by Peter Watts
Some dry “August westerlies” followed by still sunny days in the early 20 degrees and some early blooming native shrubs. These are the first signs of the spring turnaround.
At present we are very enthusiastic on the base we have to work from in the spring. August is generally a spring board for new works in the new season, during the next period members will observe the following developments on the course;
- We will begin by lightly grooming the greens next week, this procedure helps control the winter thatch.
- On Monday the 10th of August we will complete the major spring greens renovation, the renovation involves approximately 21 day turnaround. The early renovation is aimed primarily at having the greens in premium condition for the Club Championships.
- Members will also have noticed the arrival of machinery for the sand link remedial work on the 18th fairway, this work will take place in August the moment the 18th fairway dries out.
- We have also planned to continue the major returfing projects. Recent returfing work on 7th, 8th, and 17th holes has worked very well, similar extensive returfing on the 4th, & 7th green approaches is in the advanced preparation stages (offending trees have been removed, and replacement growing medium stockpiled LHS 8th green).
We always look forward to the end of the spring course works as it signifies annual improvements to the golf course.
Australian Open Volunteering
Volunteers are required for the Australian open, being held at The Australian Golf Club 26 – 29 November 2015. Acting as a Hole Marshal is the main task, although they have spots for Carry Boards and Walking scorers. Volunteers are expected to “work” all four days (though you can get a mate to share this role).
Volunteers receive 2 x Australian Open shirts, a cap/hat, spray jacket, complementary passes and lunch vouchers. Oops I almost forgot, plus a game at the Australian GC in early January. Jordan Spieth, Jason Day, Adam Scott have committed for this event.
Interested members should contact Peter Westwood on 0408 842 823 or beaglew@bigpond.com ASAP
Warren and Gibson 2015
The Warren and Gibson season commences this weekend with Muirfield hosting Gordon here on Sunday from 11:50 am. The other clubs in our pool this year are Riverside Oaks and Gordon. This is the first year under the new handicap ranges and our teams feature a lot of new faces. We wish all of our representative players the best of luck.
