Course Report by Peter Watts
The last week of July is significant in that we begin preparations for August greens renovations.
- I believe the greens have been a strong point through variable weather patterns, although historically greens have tended to be firmer and exhibit more pace in drier winters. The greens remain healthy, which is a good starting point for the approaching renovation. From the end of July we begin a program of fertilizing to boost the grass through the initial stages of the renovation. Whilst renovating early, we still maintain a 21 day turnaround, in the final 7 days the recovery is exponential.
- With small gaps in the weather we have been able to complete the major components of the planned drainage around 13th and 16th Tees and 12th After the club championships we will include sand links to the agline carry pipe.
- We are currently detailing the forest floor areas, including identifying the perimeter, and replenishing mulch where needed. A new extended area of forest floor has been established between 7th and 2nd The new regeneration area around 5th tee has been aligned to address the storm damage, new plantings and 5th tee landscaping.
- Preparations are well advanced to complete major returfing the approach on 4th green approach and RHS approach on 7th. Soil has been stockpiled RHS 8th green, whilst appropriate material has been relocated from the drainage work at 13th tee to the 4th green site.
- Five new merbau timber sand boxes will be installed on the course in the next period. Tees requiring new sand boxes include 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 11th, 14th, 17th, 18th

Muirfield Cup
The Muirfield Cup is our answer to the Presidents and Ryder Cup, and is a highly popular event on the calendar. Teams play 36 holes of golf, with 2BBB Matchplay followed by Foursomes Matchplay. Week 2 sees the teams face off in Individual Matchplay, before sitting down for an enjoyable dinner at the expense of the losing team.
Next Saturday is the last qualifying round for the Muirfield Cup. Members can qualify for the event by having a good round during the June, July and August Pewter events and ensuring they mark their card with a Cup. See the conditions of play for full details.
Next Saturday’s Pewter will be the last Shotgun start for the season.
