Top 3 things to Note this week.
- Check the local rules board before play
- Give generously to Legacy
- It is nice to be important, but it is more important to be Nice!
Digger’s Day 2025!
Saturday 8th November is Digger’s Day, and a chance for everyone to enjoy a fun day of golf, while helping to raise valuable funds for Legacy.
The Digger’s Day raffle tickets are available at the Bar for $2 each or 3 for $5. Prizes include a Callaway golf bag and hats, kindly donated by Josh Leggo and Callaway; games of golf at other courses; golf lessons with our in-house golf professionals, and more great stuff!
On Digger’s Day, there will be additional novelty events (NTP, Accuracy drives and a special Legacy Superpin). Cost will be $25, for every player, and it will cover all the additional events. The Services Trophy is open to all Current and Ex-Services people, but you must identify what service you are/were associated with, when you register at the Pro Shop on the day.
2025 Club Champions
The 2025 Club Championships have seen their final round played and as expected, there was some fantastic golf played across all the grades.
For the first time in the Club’s history, we have a Lady member winning in not only one grade, but two grades. This is a milestone for the club as we celebrate our Club Championships and equality of membership.
The 2025 Club Champion is Matt Thompson! There was a late charge from Josh Leggo, but Matt’s initial lead was too strong, and he easily claimed the victory by 9 shots, with a total of 280. Matt was also the Nett winner, by one shot over Josh Leggo.
A Reserve saw a mix of activity across the final round, but Sue Kim made the most of her third-round lead and eventually increased it to 6, to take the title over Sean Bergan. Sean temporarily took the lead with 9 holes to play, but Sue rose to the challenge and closed out the title with some impressive scoring over the final holes for a total of 304. Sue also won the Nett event over Sean.
In B Grade, third round leader, Brad Mitchell held his nerve over the course of the day, to eventually take the title by 3 shots over Alan Hart. Brad’s 4 round total was 334, holding off a charge from multiple players over the day. Chuck Norris was the Nett winner, by 2 shots over Seon Kim.
C Grade was one-way traffic, with Naomi Kim leading from start to finish. Naomi kept her cool and produced another great round, to eventually win the title by 12 shots with a total of 362, over Chris Butt. Naomi also won the nett event by 12 shots, over Phil Pearce.
The Seniors Championship became a one-sided affair as the defending Champion, Matt Thompson, trampled the field to win by 23 shots over Richard Poole in 2nd spot.
Justin Hadi had a slight lead going into the final round of the Junior Championship and held onto it to claim the overall title by 4 shots over Sean Bergan, with a total of 306.
Course Update
The course received 20mm of rain last weekend, and helped to top up the dam. The course has bounced because of it and the course staff are enjoying mowing healthy green grass instead of brittle dry grass.
Remember to be careful when walking around in the bush/creek area on the 14th hole. We have a resident snake family, who like to sun themselves.
Various projects have commenced around the golf course and will be finalised in the coming weeks. Please follow directional signage and take relief from GUR areas, as needed.
- 13th – left side on the hill, to fix the bare and uneven ground
- 4th – pathway to the 5th tee, to fix the bare and uneven ground
- 6th – removal of the rubbish pile behind the green
- 12th – renovation of the ladies Magenta tee
Club Presentation
The Club Presentation night is being held on Friday 12th December. Winners of honour board and trophy events throughout the year will receive an invitation in the coming weeks, but any member is able to attend the evening to help celebrate our golfing Champions. Please see the office to book and pay to attend.
Call-up for Faster Rounds
The Par-3’s and even some Par-4’s are not compulsory call-up, but if everyone wants a quicker round, then we encourage every group to call up. Safety is paramount, so stand behind a screen or at the back of the green, and always keep an eye on the golf balls being hit into the green (this also helps the players know where their golf ball has landed).
Calling up groups, helps get the field away from the starting tees, and players moving through the golf course. We encourage you to especially call up on ALL the Par 3 holes (2nd, 6th, 9th, 11th & 15th), to help the flow of the field.
It is important for your group not to fall behind if you do call up, but it helps with the overall speed of the field. Remember, just because a group did not call you up, it does not mean you cannot call up the group behind you.

Rule of the Week – Rule 12 – Bunkers
Your ball is in a bunker when any part of it touches sand on the ground inside the edge of the bunker, or on ground where sand would normally be, or in or on a loose impediment, movable obstruction, abnormal course condition, or integral object in the bunker.
Before playing your ball in a bunker, you may remove loose impediments (such as leaves, sticks, stones, and loose grass).
Before making a stroke at your ball in a bunker, you must not deliberately touch sand in the bunker with your hand, a club or rake or any other object to test the condition of the sand.
You must not touch the sand in the bunker with your club, in the area in front or right behind your ball, or in making a practice swing, or in your backswing when making a stroke.
You are allowed to dig in with your feet to take a stance, smooth the bunker to care for the course, place your clubs or other equipment in the bunker, or lean on a club to rest or prevent a fall.
If any of your actions in touching the sand improve the conditions affecting your stroke, you incur the General Penalty (2 strokes, or loss of hole in match play).

Have a great weekend, and happy golfing!

Friday 31st October 2025
Top 4 things to Note this week.
- Club Championships finish this weekend!
- Melbourne Cup bookings are still open
- Check the local rules board before play
- Don’t over-indulge in the “Trick or Treat” bowl
Call-up for Faster Rounds
The Par-3’s and even some Par-4’s are not compulsory call-up, but if everyone wants a quicker round, then we encourage every group to call up. Safety is paramount, so stand behind a screen or at the back of the green, and always keep an eye on the golf balls being hit into the green (this also helps the players know where their golf ball has landed).
Calling up groups, helps get the field away from the starting tees, and players moving through the golf course. We encourage you to especially call up on the 2nd and the 11th holes, to help each nine get underway.
It is important for your group not to fall behind if you do call up, but it helps with the overall speed of the field. Remember, just because a group did not call you up, it does not mean you cannot call up the group behind you.
Club Championships 2025 – moving day
Week 3 of the Club Championships saw consolidation and movement.
In A Grade, Matt Thompson continued his dominance of the event and will go into the final round with a 10-stroke lead over Josh Leggo. Josh drew 3 shots back in the 3rd round, so can he rein in the rest and make for a simply nail-biting finale.
Matt also has a strong lead in the Seniors Championship, with 20-shots between him and the pack. We are not sure what the record difference is, but this is surely setting a cracking standard.
A Reserve sees Sue Kim taking a 1-shot lead over Daniel Lowe, into the final round. Sue is fresh from winning the Ladies Championships during the week, and would love to add this Club title to her honour role. There are some strong contenders only a few shots back, so the final round will surely produce an entertaining finish.
In B Grade, Brad Mitchell consolidated his lead and now has an outright lead by 3 shots over a pack of players. That pack is 8 players, all within 3-shots of each other, so there is a large pool to make a late run for the title.
In C Grade, Naomi Kim takes a 9-shot lead over Phil Pearce into the final round. Naomi has had the lead from the 1st round and is determined to add her name to the honour board.
In the Junior Championship, Justin Hadi had an impressive 1 over par in the third round to overtake Sean Bergan and take a 2-shot lead into the final round.
We wish all the competitors the best of luck for the final round.
Members are all invited to come out and watch the final round and help celebrate the respective Champions at the end of the day.

Course Update
The rain did not really eventuate this week, so we are still seeing the dam level drop. We only received 12mm mid-week when we were supposed to get 20-30mm. The Club is continuing to buy water, to ensure we keep the course up to the expected standard.
Course Works
In the coming weeks, weather permitting, members will see some works started around the golf course. There will be additional GUR areas and turfing going on, so please follow any directional signage, and keep an eye out for workers on selected sites.
The work program will involve the following areas:
- 13th – left side on the hill, to fix the bare and uneven ground
- 4th – pathway to the 5th tee, to fix the bare and uneven ground
- 6th – removal of the rubbish pile behind the green
- 12th – renovation of the ladies Magenta tee
Robotic Mowers
Some members may have seen a demonstration on Wednesday morning, around the chipping green, of a small Husqvarna robotic mower. They are being used on golf courses all around the world with great results. The small demonstration on Wednesday has now led to a larger one being scheduled for a couple of weeks-time, where we will be using the mower for a few weeks. The trial will centre around a couple of fairways (yet to be decided which ones), so we will advise more details, when it has all been locked in.
Bunkers and Rakes
Each Saturday, and especially during the Championships, the bunkers are raked before play. The attached photo was taken a couple of Saturdays ago, and shows the front right bunker on the 2nd hole. Obviously, a Full Playing Saturday Member left their bunker in this state. There are two issues here:
-
- The member did not rake it after playing from the bunker
- The rest of their group did nothing!
Apart from being selfish, it is disrespectful to other players and the course staff who take pride in preparing the golf course every day for the members.
Digger’s Day 2025!
Saturday 8th November is Digger’s Day, and a chance for everyone to enjoy a fun day of golf, while helping to raise valuable funds for Legacy.
The Digger’s Day raffle is open and tickets are available at the Bar for $2 each or 3 for $5.
4BBB Mixed Knockout
The final of the Mixed Knockout was played last Sunday, and it was another great contest. Val & Ian Bamford were triumphant 2&1, over Sonya & Michael Lenart. Val & Ian now have their name on the trophy a couple of times. Well done to Val & Ian.
Club Presentation – Change of Date!!
The Club Presentation night is being held on Friday 12th December and not the November date announced last week. Winners of honour board and trophy events throughout the year will receive an invitation in the coming weeks, but any member is able to attend the evening to help celebrate our golfing Champions. Please see the office to book and pay to attend.

Chips, Shanks & Holes-In-One!
The surname Forrest usually hits the MGC newsletter due to Dean, but Glenn Forest showed last week that he taught his son, everything he knows. Glenn was on the first hole of his 3rd round of Championships, and produced a flawless Eagle! He went on to feature in the results page and break his handicap for the day. Well done Glenn.
If any player has a hole in one in a competition, or any other impressive feat, please make sure you take a photo at the hole, and then send it to the General Manager, along with how it happened, or simply reply to this newsletter email, so we can share your achievement in the newsletter.
Card Night – 500
The next event is scheduled for Thursday 13th November, with a 6pm start.
The following dates to put in your diary, are 11th December, and for 2026, they start with 8th January, 12th February and 12th March, all with a 6pm start. Registrations can be made at the bar, or see Kathy at the bar for more details.
Rules of Golf – Giving Advice
In stroke play, player A asks player B what the distance is to the centre of the green and if there is a bunker behind the green. Player B answers both questions. What is the penalty?
The correct answer is: There is no penalty. See Definition of Advice. Advice does not include the location of things on the course.
Have a great weekend, and happy golfing!

Friday 24th October 2024
Top 4 things to Note this week.
- Club Championships continue this weekend!
- Melbourne Cup bookings are now open
- Check the local rules board before play
- Respect other Members, on and off the golf course
Club Championships 2025 – halfway point!
Week 2 of the Club Championships saw consolidation, and some fading hopes! Holding your nerve for 2, 3 and 4 rounds is not an easy task.
In A Grade, Matt Thompson continued his good form, doubling down on his 1st round 5-under par, with a fine 1-under par, 68. Matt takes top spot and a 13-shot lead going into the 3rd round. Josh Leggo takes 2nd spot and leads a tight pack.
Matt is also leading the Seniors, by 20 shots and surely has his 6th title in a row, in his sights.
Unfortunately, in A Reserve, the 2nd round leader has had to withdraw from the event, due to personal reasons. This opens the competition right up and catapults Sue Kim into the lead position on 152. With only 1 shot separating Sue from Daniel Lowe in 2nd place, and the top 12 all within 9-shots, this title is certainly up for the taking.
In B Grade, Brad Mitchell improved on his first-round score by 11 shots, to tie for the lead with Chuck Norris, on a total of 165. The duo are only 2 shots ahead of a pack of players, all with the ability to shoot a good score. With the top 12 players all within 7 shots, the B Grade title is not even close to being decided.
In C Grade, Naomi Kim had an impressive 86 in her 2nd round, to take her total to 176, and now holds a 10-shot lead over her nearest rival, Chris Butt. The years have shown that anything can happen in this grade and so all eyes will be watching as the next two rounds play out.
In the Junior Championship, Sean Bergan now has a 5-shot lead over Jun Hui Kim and Justin Hadi.
Respect for each Other
With such a diverse membership, there are bound to be differences in demographics, culture, and ideologies. Questioning the integrity of other members is unbecoming of the type of member we want at Muirfield. Every member deserves to be able to enjoy their golf without being harassed. The senseless words and actions of some people, can leave long-lasting scars to others and even affect their ability to continue playing golf. Members are asked to refrain from sharing ill-informed thoughts, with other players.

Course Update
Weather!! The extreme weather changes that we have seen in the past week, certainly take a toll on the golf course. The hot and windy days deplete our water supply and create a lot of debris which the course staff clean up every morning.
There is a lot more run on the golf course, as the dry conditions provide a hard surface. Players are asked to watch where their golf ball goes, as it can run another 10-20metres from where you think it may be, and therefore run into the rough or mulched areas.
Digger’s Day 2025!
Saturday 8th November is Digger’s Day, and a chance for everyone to enjoy a fun day of golf, while helping to raise valuable funds for Legacy.

4BBB Mixed Knockout
The final of the Mixed Knockout is being played this weekend, between Sonya & Michael Lenart and Val & Ian Bamford. Best of luck to both pairs as they shoot it out for the title.
Premier League 2025/26
The annual Premier League competition teed off last weekend.
Remember that the “Team Survivor” part of the competition also kicked off, which eliminates the team with the lowest score.
Club Presentation and Club Representative Team Dinners
It is that time of the year again, where we celebrate the winners of the major trophy events, as well as the representative teams that have put our Muirfield name up in lights around Sydney.
If you represented Muirfield in a Pennant match throughout the year, then there will be a dinner held on Friday 7th November for the representative teams. Please book and pay at the office.
The Club Presentation night is being held on Friday 28th November. Winners of honour board and trophy events throughout the year will receive an invitation in the coming weeks, but any member is able to attend the evening to help celebrate our golfing Champions. Congratulations to Sue Ruxton, winner of the Ladies 2025 Medal of Medals, with a score of 69.
Ladies Championships
There were some fantastic scores recorded in the second round of the Ladies’ Championships. After two rounds, in Division 1, Sue Kim has a 6-stroke lead over Sienna Ryu, in Division 2 Jenny Kim leads Paula Zarra by 4 and in Division 3 Sue Park has a 4-stroke lead over Jenny Scholz. The chase has been set! Let’s see what the final round brings.
The draw for the 3rd round has been posted, please check it and let the Ladies Captain, Ruth Le Nevez, know if you need to be included on the timesheet or want to withdraw.
Ladies’ Annual Meeting
Earlier this evening Vicki sent an email regarding our annual meeting. Please look out for the email and read it. All positions on the Ladies’ committee are open and a nomination sheet for the positions of Captain, Vice Captain, President and Vice President is attached to her email.

Chips, Shanks & Holes-In-One!
This past week there has been a swag of achievements by our members on the golf course.
Ali Neasbey has only been back playing golf at Muirfield for a few weeks, after a few years off, and has already achieved her first Hole-In-One! Ali teed up on the 6th hole with her trusty 9 iron, and hit it perfectly off the club face. High and straight, never deviating from the pin, as it took two short hops and then went straight into the hole. Well done Ali!!
Last week, Jae Yoo was playing his normal game, which usually consists of some impressive shots as he does hit quite a large golf ball! On the 13th hole, he proceeded to hit his drive and then all he needed for his approach into the green was an 8-iron, to which he put onto the back of the green, to a red pin. The putt was 20-foot, which rolled perfectly into the hole – another easy Eagle, of which he has had a couple of, in the past few weeks.
The Killara Cup was held last Sunday and Muirfield shared the silverware in the individual and the team’s event.
James Vidler showed superb form to take a joint win, with an impressive 1-under par 71. He then teamed up with Josh Leggo, Ruan Goosen and Ben Rollo, to tie in the win with Killara, for the best team (best Club). Killara is a strong course and our Muirfield players have certainly brought their A-game to the event. Well done to James on his individual win and the rest of the Muirfield team.
If any player has a hole in one in a competition, or any other impressive feat, please make sure you take a photo at the hole, and then send it to the General Manager, along with how it happened, or simply reply to this newsletter email, so we can share your achievement in the newsletter.

Rule 6.3c – Wrong Ball
You must not make a stroke at a wrong ball
See Full Rules for information on the Exception for Ball Moving in Water
In stroke play, you get the General Penalty (2 strokes), and you must correct the mistake by continuing play with the original ball by playing it as it lies or taking relief under the rules:
The stroke made with the wrong ball and any more strokes before the mistake is corrected do not count.
If you do not correct the mistake before making a stroke to begin another hole or, for the final hole of the round, before returning your scorecard you are disqualified.
In match play: If you and your opponent play each other’s ball during the play of a hole, the first to make a stroke at a wrong ball gets the general penalty (loss of hole).
If it is not known which wrong ball was played first, there is no penalty, and the hole must be played out with the balls exchanged.

In stroke play, if you swing at and miss a wrong ball, you still get two penalty strokes, however, the actual missed stroke is disregarded. Since you made a stroke at a wrong ball, you get the general penalty of 2 strokes (loss of hole in match play).
The easiest way to prevent this mistake is to put clear identifying marks on your ball.
Have a great weekend, and happy golfing!
