Muirfield Open Amateur

The Muirfield Open Amateur was held last Sunday, 5th July 2015. A total of 95 entrants, our biggest field in years, turned out for the event and the course was presented in excellent condition by the greens staff. Scoring was tough for most of the field with the greens slick, and the softer fairways helping the course to play longer than usual.

One person who didn’t find it tough was Brad Doherty, who shot an excellent 3 under par 66 (Nett 65) to sweep all the major honours. Brad won the Overall Scratch, Overall Nett and Junior Scratch prizes and, having had the pleasure of playing with him, I can say he should be very proud of the way he withstood a few late round nerves to finish strongly.

Course Maintenance

With winter approaching and our greens recently renovated, repairing divots and pitch marks is more important than ever. Members are advised that our preferred way to repair a pitch-mark is as follows:

  1. Use a pitch repair tool whenever possible.
  2. Insert the repair tool at the edge of the pitch mark. Do NOT insert the tool within the depression itself.
  3. Using a turning motion, push the edge of the pitch mark toward the centre. Do this around the edges of the indentation. Do NOT insert the tool under the indented area and try to pry up the depressed turf – a common mistake that breaks the roots of the plant leading to dead spots on the green.
  4. Tap down the repaired area with your putter so that the surface is even.

For Divots in the fairways and rough, please use the following procedure:

  1. Stand on the divot or tap down the edges with your club.
  2. Fill the divot with sand and smooth the sand level with the surface. Do not leave a mound of sand, as this will invariably damage the sharpness of the mowers.
  3. Throw the displaced divot into the rough, as it will not regrow by placing it back in the divot.
