Out of the Rough — Friday 3rd October 2025

Top 5 things to Note this week.

  • Club Championship start in one week!
  • Daylight Saving starts Sunday 5th October!
  • Voting for Directors is from Monday!
  • Preferred Lies are OFF
  • Check the local rules board before play

Daylight Saving & Public Holiday
Remember, daylight saving starts on Sunday 5th October.  Wind your clocks forward by one hour, before you go to bed on Saturday night.  (2am becomes 3am).  You do not want to miss your Sunday morning tee time, by an hour!

Remember, Monday 6th October is a public holiday, so the golf course will be busy.

Members AGM and Director Voting
Notice has been given that the 70th Annual General Meeting of Members of Muirfield Golf Club, will be held at the Muirfield Golf Club Clubhouse, on Thursday 16th October 2025, at 7:30pm.

Nominations for Directors are now CLOSED.  Voting will take place from Monday 6th October, and will all be done on-line, from Monday 6th to 5pm Tuesday 14th October 2025.
How to Vote?  An email will arrive on Monday from Phil Lewis at Elections Australia (myvote).  Please keep an eye out for it, as it may land in your junk/spam file instead of your inbox.  Follow the instructions listed and submit your vote online.  Once you submit the vote, it is locked in and cannot be changed, so please read the instructions carefully.

Candidate information is available on the club website, on the noticeboard in the clubhouse, and will also be attached to the voting email.

Any questions, please see the clubhouse office.

Call Up and be Respectful!
Calling up is a great way to help speed up play.

When a group is good enough to call your group up, on any hole, then please respect that group by not talking or moving around, while they are putting out and you are arriving at the green.  Noisy arrivals will prove to be disruptive and may not get your group called up again!

Club Championships 2025
The 2025 Club Championships are on again in October.  The Championships are run over 4 consecutive Saturdays (11th, 18th & 25th Oct & 1st Nov).If you wish to nominate for the Club Championships, read the conditions of play on the website (in the timesheet section), and then nominate and pay for your spot at the office.  You will need to pick an AM or a PM preference for your first two rounds.  It is very important, that you only nominate, if you can play all four (4) rounds.  Nominations close on Saturday 4th October 2025

Course Update

The golf course is full-steam ahead!!

The grass is growing and filling in the divots and other grooves in the turf.  Some of the divots have had their sand washed out over the past weeks, so if you see some unfilled divots, please do the right thing and add some sand to them.  The slope of the 14th hole, along with the wash-out of sand, has made it look like more on that hole, so please help keep the course in good condition, and fill divots.

Preferred Lies are OFF from Saturday 4th October.  The grass coverage and lack of mud on the ball, now allows us to remove this local rule, in time for the Club Championships next week.  As always, please read the local rules board outside the Pro Shop, before play.

Member’s Survey 2025
Members would have received the 2025 Survey via email.  If you do not have it, then please check your “junk” file as it may have slipped into there.  In the survey this year, we want to know a bit more about you, and greatly value your thoughts and experiences at Muirfield Golf Club. To ensure we continue to grow and provide the best possible environment for our members, we invite you to take a few moments to complete our 2025 Members Survey.

If you were a part of a team last year, then your team Captain has all the information.  There are always spaces for new teams and for single players looking to join a team.  Teams consist of 8 players and the scores are collated from your normal Saturday game, so you do not need to book special games or do anything extra, apart from play as many rounds as you can, for your team.  The League starts from 18th October, and will run through summer, with the finals being played in February & March 2026.

See the attached flyer for details or see the office to register.

The competition costs $50 per player, and this needs to be paid at the office by Saturday 4th October. Click here for more information.

With the launch of the new Callaway Opus SP and the Taylormade MG5 wedges we have secured a large range of demo wedges so you can see and feel the difference of improved turf interaction. RAISE THE CG. LOWER YOUR SCORES.

For players who demand precision on every shot, OPUS SP is purpose-built to flite the ball lower, increase spin, and maximise control— especially from scoring distances.

SPIN POCKET™ CONSTRUCTION

A re-engineered 2-piece construction head design strategically reshapes mass to optimize CG locations. The Spin Pocket redistributes weight higher, raising the CG, and promoting a lower, more penetrating launch. The result is more spin and enhanced control, especially when you need to flight shots or attack tight pins.

NEW SPIN GEN 2.0 FACE

The most advanced face in OPUS history. A new 17° groove angle with tighter pitch spacing delivers more groove edge contact for more consistent spin across a variety of lies. Combined with a deeper cross-hatch laser pattern across the face, Spin Gen 2.0 produces enhanced friction for more bite and stopping power on all types of approach shots.

INTRODUCING FULLY FORGED MG5 WEDGES

Tour-inspired, fully forged MG5 wedges bring you world-class feel, performance, and versatility in six precision-milled grinds designed to help you take your short game to the next level.

Consistent Performance in All Conditions

MG5 wedges utilize Spin Tread Technology and a RAW face finish to help you maintain more spin and control, even in wet conditions. Just like tire treads keep your car connected to the road, Spin Tread Technology redirects water away from the clubface and increases friction with the ball at impact.

More Spin and Control

MG5 wedges employ all-new aggressive saw-milled grooves to help take your short game to the next level. Redesigned with ultra-tight tolerances, steeper walls and sharper radii, the grooves produce more spin for maximum control on every shot.

Tour-Inspired Grinds for Maximum Playability

Consisting of six different precision-milled grinds for all matter of swing types and playing conditions, MG5 wedges allow golfers to build the perfect wedge makeup for their game.

Friday 26th September 2025

Top 3 things to Note this week.

  • Club Championship Nominations are OPEN for 1 more week.
  • Check the local rules board before play.
  • Premier League – have you registered your team?

Club Championships 2025
The 2025 Club Championships are on again in October.  The Championships are run over 4 consecutive Saturdays (11th, 18th & 25th Oct & 1st Nov). The first round has been moved off the public holiday weekend this year, but this means that there will be no contingency date, due to other fixtures (Digger’s Day and Woolfield Shield) which run concurrently on from the Championships.  Therefore, if a round of the Championships is washed out, then the number of rounds will likely be reduced.

If you wish to nominate for the Club Championships, read the conditions of play on the website (in the timesheet section), and then nominate and pay for your spot at the office.  You will need to pick an AM or a PM preference for your first two rounds.  It is very important, that you only nominate, if you can play all four (4) rounds.  Nominations close on Saturday 4th October 2025.  Good luck to all combatants, as the Club Championships tee off for 2025.

Course UpdateThe golf course has bounced back very well, even after the 10mm we received in the storm from last Monday.  The lightning unfortunately knocked out some irrigation lines, causing sprinklers to be on for a few hours in a couple of spots, so you may have seen a puddle or two around the clubhouse and practice nets as a result.

The greens are performing well, and many are commenting on their increased pace.

Preferred Lies are being dialled back from this Saturday, so your 30cm preferred lie will only be on the fairways – not the rough or the mulched areas.  If we have fine weather, with warm temperatures, then they are expected to be taken completely off by next weekend, in time for the Club Championships.  Please read the local rules board outside the Pro Shop, before play.

Members Annual General Meeting (AGM)
Notice has been given that the 70th Annual General Meeting of Members of Muirfield Golf Club, will be held at the Muirfield Golf Club Clubhouse, on Thursday 16th October 2025, at 7:30pm.  A copy of the agenda and items of business are available by downloading them from the Club website or viewing them on the Club noticeboard in the Member’s lounge.  A timesheet has been set up on the website, for Members to register their intention to attend the AGM.  A copy of the 202425 Annual Report is available on the website, under the “About Us” and “Governance & Policies” tabs, then in the Annual Report section.

Nominations for Directors are open.  Nomination forms are available from the office during normal office hours.  Nominations for Directors will close at 5:00pm Thursday 2nd October 2025.  Voting for Directors will take place, if needed, from Monday 6th October to 5pm Tuesday 14th October 2025.

Safety First!
There was a serious incident on the golf course a couple of weeks ago, whereby a player was hit by an errant tee shot.  The person was on the 5th green and the ball came from the 13th tee.  This is just one of the areas around the golf course where this can occur, so we ask players to be vigilant on two counts:
Firstly, if you hit a ball and it is going off the line of your fairway or hole, then please yell “FORE” in a loud voice.  The more time you can give someone to take cover, the better it is for all concerned.  A player may not get hit and you may not feel terrible for seriously injuring someone.Secondly, if you are in an open area, like the 5th green, then take notice of your surroundings and from where a ball may come from.  If on the 5th green, then see if there is anyone on the 13th tee and take positive steps towards ensuring your own safety, by keeping an eye on the tee shots, while your playing partners are putting out.

Ensuring your own safety and the safety of others, should be front of mind when on any golf course, not just Muirfield.

4BBB Mixed Knockout
The nomination sheet for the 2025 4BBB Mixed Knockout, is open online.  Pairings can nominate to play in the event, with the qualifying round on Sunday 5th October.  Nominations close on Saturday 4th October.  Remember, you still need to place your own names into the qualifying round, to play, as the nomination sheet just puts you in the event, but not on the timesheet.

Premier League 2025/26

Fast Friday 2025/26
The first Fast Friday event for the new season, is being played on Friday, 10th October.  Here is how it works.

*          7 holes – playing 10th, 11th, 20th (Par 3 over the dam), 12th (shortened), 16th, 17th, and 18th.

*          Shotgun start at 5:30 p.m. to try and help those who cannot take a flexi-Friday, to get to the club for their game.  The focus is on quick play in a fast format that will take about 1 hour and 45 minutes.

The normal booking system applies, so book on-line.  See you out there.

Muirfield Cup – Newton Wins!
Day 2 saw Newton take a 3-point lead into the Singles round.  Not a lot to play with, but both teams brought their A-game, which made for some exciting match-ups!  The games turned multiple times and for a moment the Wearn team looked like they might claw some of the deficit back.  The Newton team stood strong, and on the back-nine, put together some fantastic golf to secure the team win.

This meant that the Newton team won all three rounds: the Foursomes, 4B Handicap and the Singles, for an 18 – 14 win.  They were rewarded with the Wearn team having to buy them all dinner!  Congratulations to the Newton team.

Golf Connect Changeover of Handicap System
As members would have been advised through Golf Australia communications, and as part of a national update to golf handicapping, Golf Australia is introducing a new system – Golf Australia CONNECT. All golf clubs in Australia are required to transition to this new platform.

This transition will update the method by which golfers access their handicap information.

With the introduction of Golf Australia CONNECT, all golfers will be assigned a unique Golf ID. Existing club members’ GOLF Link numbers will become their Golf ID, which will remain unchanged regardless of club transfers.

The move from GOLF Link to Golf Australia CONNECT may result in minor adjustments to previous handicaps due to the retroactive application of competition PCC (Playing Course Conditions) dating back to 1 January 2023, aligning with the World Handicapping System. For most golfers, anticipated changes should not exceed 0.5 strokes in either direction.

Additional updates include the release of the new Golf Australia Official App and a revised Daily Handicap calculation method, now featuring a consistency factor. Handicap history will remain accessible through golf.com.au, and current GOLF Link account holders will need to verify their accounts with an email verification process.

Changeover Period
This significant system upgrade will temporarily disrupt standard golf operations:

  • From the evening of Sunday 28 September, the GolfLink system will be shutdown.
  • From Monday 29 September for approximately 2 weeks, handicapping services will be unavailable. During this period, Muirfield will continue running daily competitions, utilising handicaps that will be frozen from 28th September.
  • Competition scores recorded during the transition cannot be retrospectively handicapped after the club moves to Golf Australia CONNECT.
  • Handicapped competitions are scheduled to resume on or around 10th October, or possibly sooner if system testing concludes ahead of schedule.

MiClub is collaborating closely with Golf Australia to facilitate a seamless system transition. We will keep Members informed through the weekly newsletter and on the club website.

Golf Shop
Ryder Cup Week is here, and to Celebrate the Ryder Cup your golf shop is running a sweepstake for a Limited Edition Set of Ping Headcovers (Driver, Fairway and Hybrid). To qualify all you need to do is purchase any dozen balls in the golf shop from now until Wednesday 5pm, entries via receipt with Name or Member number will be placed in the draw (draw taking place Thursday morning).
